Spam - go die in a hole, forever!

So, as the title might suggest, spam on the forums is now virtually gone forever.

The reason that spam was such a problem was because it was pretty easy for automated spam bots to register accounts and start posting random nonsense, with the only hope of either giving users malware/trogons/viruses/pron, or helping sites that pay for their links to be spammed using outdated SEO tactics that really don't work very well these days.

The spam is now gone and I can pretty much say with a good level of certainty that it's not coming back. The registration button on the forum is now gone and it is no longer possible to use the old method of registering an account. So for players to register they now need to type the command /register in-game followed by their email address e.g. /register me@example.com. The website will then send them an email with a link to a registration form where they can fill out their details and register an account. Note that emails are currently being sent to spam on some providers, I'm working on this, but so far haven't made much progress to find a solution for it.

This new system has a number of new - and possibly exciting - benefits, first the user's username will be their Minecraft Username meaning that forum usernames will now match in-game usernames. Second their UUID is now captured and stored so that in the future we will be able to automatically update usernames when someone changes their Minecraft username. For staff this will be very useful as you will be able to view a user's UUID by going to their profile. Lastly, in the future it might be possible to view previous usernames a player has used, we may also make this an in-game feature as well.

We will also be capturing UUID's for existing users, if you have registered on the forums with a different username from your Minecraft username and we can't match your username to a UUID, we will be contacting you directly to correct this. If after trying to contact you we still cannot contact you, then we will remove your account, provided it does not have any posts associated with it.

This, and the changes describe above will open up some new possibilities for deeper in-game and forum integration, so look forward to those. Also note that in future to login to the forum you will need to use your email address instead of your username, so make sure you know your email address is :P

So, enjoy the forums spam free!
Regards,
Aaron
